Summer in Sycamore

Our theme for this term is Cornwall.  Our key question is 'Why is Cornwall legendary?'  The classroom is already starting to look like Cornwall, with a flock of seagulls taking residence.  Fred (our class mannequin) is ready for the beach.

Science Day

We spent the whole day learning about habitats and classification of creatures.  We were very lucky to have Jess and her axolotl as our special guests.  The children did very well and we ended the day with a minibeast hunt.

Broccoli Crop

You might remember seeing our post about our 'Food and Farming Day'.  When we got back from that trip, we planted some broccoli seedlings.  We have tended them carefully ever since and now have a marvellous crop of broccoli.   We harvested the first lot amidst much excitement.

Village History Walk

Sycamore had an extremely interesting and informative walk around the village.  We wanted to learn more about our local area and the history of St Teath.  We were very fortunate to have the local expert, Anne Perisic and her granddaughter Miss Banks as our knowledgeable guides.  We now know lots of historical facts about the school and church, the history of the war memorial and lots of other things.  Lots of us now also believe in fairies...

Words on the Wing

What a wonderful couple of days we had with Reg.  We made shadow puppets and scenery, we composed poems, we did some calligraphy with feather quills, recorded puppet shows and learnt lots about birds.

Polzeath Beach Trip

We had so much fun on our trip to Polzeath Beach!  The crew from Polzeath Marine Conservation were really fantastic.  We all learnt lots about marine life and enjoyed rockpooling, beachcombing and playing on the beach.

St Endellion Church Visit

We had a brilliant day at St Endellion Church.  The children played the organ, rang the bells and even dressed up in the vicar's vestments!  They consolidated their knowledge about church features, did some craft and even wrote some poetry!

Flower Tent Exhibits, Royal Cornwall Show

Well done, Sycamore!  In the Commonwealth flag bunting category in the Flower Tent, some of our flags came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, very highly commended and highly commended!

Words on the Wing

Sycamore Class had a visit from the wonderful Reg Payn.  Reg was introducing a project we shall be working on called 'Words on the Wing'.  We shall be learning about birds that live in our local area, their habits and migration patterns.  This project will involve poetry, songs and stories amongst others things, and will end with two full days of shadow puppet workshops with Reg.

Jubilee Party

What a fabulous time we all had at our school party, to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee!

We had some lovely visitors this week.  Reggie's chicks came to see us.  They were only 3 days old!

We also had a visit from Rob and Deano from the R.N.L.I., who told us all about beach safety.  A great way to start off our Cornwall topic!

Sycamore had lots of fun estimating and measuring the capacity of containers.

French Day

Ohh la la!  What a fun day we had on French Day.  We practised speaking and writing in French, we sang songs (including a 3-part round), we learnt about Henri Rousseau (a French artist) and produced some lovely art of our own.  We played French Boules, dressed in French colours cooked and ate some French food.  Super!

Crazy Hair Day!

The children looked amazing with their crazy hair, to raise money for the PTA.
